comPOSITIONS: A Vocabulary of Space

"Abitare lo spazio" by Luciano Fabro

Focus areas

A cross-curricular activity that cuts across various subjects including science, design and technology, Italian, maths, geography, and art and image.

Activities

This session is designed as a visual vocabulary built up within the exhibition through a sequence of activities and experiences involving the body and space. The students will be invited to see how Luciano Fabro organises the environment using geometric shapes, proportions, directions and apparently invisible lines that create harmony, tension and balance. By looking at works such as Habitat (di Rotterdam), the class will discover how spatial configurations – and the relationships between objects and structures – can be traced back to simple geometric forms.

These activities will build up a personal treasure trove of experiences. As part of this process, analysing the titles of the works of art will show how they can be means of orientation and disorientation: Fabro’s wit and wordplay will encourage the students to shift their perspective and see new meanings in shapes, materials and spaces. Ultimately, everyone’s contributions will come together in a shared visual vocabulary of the exhibition.
