The monograph “ICARUS” accompanies the first European retrospective dedicated to Yukinori Yanagi, offering an in-depth exploration of the fundamental aspects that have informed his work. The volume examines the influences that have shaped the artist’s trajectory and traces the evolution of his practice over the decades. In addition to an unpublished text by Yanagi, the publication features essays by international critics and curators, including a contribution from curator Mami Kataoka, who contextualizes Yanagi’s work within the global art scene, and an essay by art historian Reiko Tomii, focusing on the impact of contemporary historical memory — particularly that of Japan — on the artist’s practice. The exhibition project at Pirelli HangarBicocca is presented through extensive photographic documentation, a conversation between Yanagi and the exhibition’s curators, and detailed entries on the displayed works, written by scholars and enriched with a selection of historical images. Moreover, the volume includes a section dedicated to the ambitious and visionary site-specific interventions created by the artist for the regeneration of several remote Japanese islands.
