“XYZ” is the monograph accompanying Aki Sasamoto’s first retrospective exhibition in Europe; it traces more than twenty years of the artist’s interdisciplinary experimentation, in which performance, sculpture, installation, and language intertwine and continually transform.

The volume opens with an extensively illustrated index featuring more than fifty works created between 2004 and the present, each accompanied by images and a dedicated text. Organized alphabetically by title, from A to Z, this overview of Sasamoto’s entire oeuvre brings to light associations, recurring elements, and connections between works from different stages of her practice.

This section is complemented by newly commissioned contributions from Hendrik Folkerts (Chief Curator of Programme at Kunsthaus Zürich), Barbara London (curator and founder of video-media exhibition and collection programs at MoMA, New York), and Christina Li (curator and Core Tutor for the BEAR Fine Art programme at ArtEZ University of the Arts in Arnhem), who offer different perspectives on the artist’s practice, from its performative dimension to the role of language. Pau Atela (Professor of Mathematical Sciences at Smith College), a mathematician and longtime friend of Sasamoto, offers a personal reflection on her work, while a conversation between Cecilia Alemani (Jr. Director & Chief Curator of High Line Art, New York) and the artist explores key themes and pivotal moments of her research.

The volume also features an in-depth look at the exhibition at Pirelli HangarBicocca, with a text by curators Roberta Tenconi and Tatiana Palenzona, alongside comprehensive photographic documentation of the works and their activations. Together, these materials capture the unprecedented dialogue between installations created at different stages of the artist’s practice and brought together for the first time within a single exhibition space.
