Reincarnations of Shadows
14 September 2023 – 7.00pm
Thao Nguyen Phan in conversation with Jaap Guldemond
The Public Program devoted to Thao Nguyen Phan’s Reincarnations of Shadows exhibition opens on Thursday 14 September 2023 at 7 PM with a conversation between Thao Nguyen Phan and Jaap Guldemond, Director of Exhibitions and Chief Curator at the Eye Filmmuseum in Amsterdam.
Starting from the production of the new film work that also gives the title to the exhibition, the conversation explores the artist’s work delving into her dreamlike poetics in which folk traditions and Fairy Tale narratives merge with historical events in her native country.
In addition, the dialogue focuses on her complex relations to moving images: indeed, in all of Thao Nguyen Phan’s works, cinema is present as a source of imagery and inspiration, particularly through references to the research of Southeast Asian experimental filmmakers.
The event is organized by Pirelli HangarBicocca in collaboration with Fondazione In Between Art Film and follows the co-production of the work Reincarnations of Shadows (moving-image-poem), 2023, which gives the exhibition its title.
The conversation was held in English with simultaneous translation.
Free admission upon reservation.
Pirelli HangarBicocca Members are guaranteed admission without a booking by showing their Membership Card at the entrance.
As director of Exhibition, Guldemond is Chief Curator and responsible for exhibition programming at the Eye Filmmuseum in Amsterdam. Since the completion of the new museum building in 2012, Guldemond has curated the various exhibitions at the museum, in which he has explored new and different ways to combine the visual art field and the field of cinematography.
Within this focus Guldemond has also set out to find new ways on how to exhibit the work of film directors, such as Michelangelo Antonioni, Andrei Tarkovskij, Wang Bing, Béla Tarr, the Quay Brothers, and many others, alongside exhibitions of artists like William Kentridge, Ryoji Ikeda, Isaac Julien, Cao Guimarães, Jesper Just, Tacita Dean, Gusmão & Paiva, Yang Fudong, Anthony McCall, Chantal Akerman, Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Saodat Ismailova and Francis Alys.
Before working at the Eye Filmmuseum, Guldemond worked as Chief Curator at several Dutch musea for Modern & Contemporary Art like the Van Abbe museum, in Eindhoven, the Kröller Müller museum and the museum Boijmans van Beuningen in Rotterdam. Throughout his career he has published many catalogues and articles and in 2001 he was responsible as Commisioner for the Dutch Pavilion at the Venice Biennial.
