Jean Tinguely
Happenings, collaborations, ephemeral works. Lecture by Annalisa Rimmaudo
28 NOVEMBRE 2024 - 18.30-20.30
The Public Program of Pirelli HangarBicocca dedicated to the retrospective of Jean Tinguely, presents, on Thursday 28 November 2024 from 6.30 PM to 8.30 PM, the lecture by Annalisa Rimmaudo “Happenings, collaborations, ephemeral works”. The event is also part of the program talks among friends by miart.
Annalisa Rimmaudo, curator of contemporary art collections at the Centre Georges Pompidou, will explore Jean Tinguely’s production of ephemeral, performative, and collaborative works by alternating the talk with the viewing of photographic reproductions, documents, and films including Donn Alan Pennebaker’s Breaking It Up at the Museum – Homage to New York (1960), a documentation of the legendary happening in the garden of MoMA New York, and Tinguely: A Kinetic Cosmos (1970s), a documentary by François de Menil that follows the artist’s work for more than a decade in the 1970s.
The lecture explores the most radical aspects of Tinguely’s research: his ability to build relationships and connections with other artists, musicians, and intellectuals, overcoming the idea of authorship; his persistence to question the nature and value of the work, to challenge its musealization; and finally, his desire to engage the public to make them participants in the creative process.
The lecture will be held in Italian; the films are in English without subtitles.
Admission to the event is free of charge. Due to the limited number of seats, reservations are recommended.

miart’s talks among friends is a programme of conversations about art, friendship and ‘all situations in which the final work is the result of the work of more than one person’ organised by miart, the international modern and contemporary art fair organised by Fiera Milano, in collaboration with a number of Milanese institutions with the aim of celebrating their ability to promote collaborations and synergies. Talks among friends anticipates the twenty-ninth edition of the event, which will be held from 4 to 6 April 2025 and will draw inspiration from the figure of Robert Rauschenberg, with whom Jean Tinguely collaborated on the occasion of the legendary performance ‘Homage to New York’, realised in 1960 in the MoMA garden. That same year, Tinguely began a long friendship with Rauschenberg and collaborated with others on the exhibition ‘Dylaby: Dynamic Labyrinth’ at the Staedelijk Museum in 1962.
