‘The Seven Heavenly Palaces, 2004-2015″: themes and insights (three years)

‘The Seven Heavenly Palaces 2004-2015’ by Anselm Kiefer

Activities
Students will be guided on a tour of discovery of Pirelli HangarBicocca – one of the largest contemporary art exhibition spaces in Europe, resulting from the conversion of a 15,000-square-metre industrial plant once dedicated to the production of locomotives – and its permanent installation.
On the occasion of its opening to the public in 2004, the permanent and site-specific installation I Sette Palazzi Celesti was created, expanded in 2015 with the inclusion of five large canvases. Together with the seven ‘towers’, the paintings form a single imposing installation entitled The Seven Heavenly Palaces 2004-2015.
Anselm Kiefer (Donaueschingen, 1945) is one of the world’s most important contemporary artists and one of the distinctive features of his work is his use of materials, both natural and artificial, often accompanied by multiple symbolic meanings. One of the recurring themes within his works is a reflection on the theme of memory, both individual and collective, as well as a profound reworking of German history.
The Seven Heavenly Palaces 2004-2015 represent a culmination of the artist’s entire oeuvre, summarising his main themes and research.
