Let’s Race with Tinguely!
"Jean Tinguely"
Focus areas
These interdisciplinary activities can cut across a range of different subjects, such as science, history, civics, geography, and art and image.
Activities
During the visit, the students will find out about the pioneering kinetic artist Jean Tinguely (Fribourg 1925-1991 Bern), whose works revolutionised the concept of art itself. At the heart of his work is the machine, in the form of a sculpture endowed with movement, sound, and a playful uniqueness. Tinguely used discarded objects and found materials, such as gears and scrap, to create mechanical sculptures that are often humorous, noisy, and cacophonic—each with a life of its own thanks to intricate mechanisms and motors. A devoted Formula 1 fan, Tinguely also created a series of works celebrating his love of speed and the energy of movement, turning vehicles and sports accessories into works of art.
During the workshop session, which will be held in the exhibition space, the students will embark on a journey of discovery in stages guided by a series of support materials, including questions and challenges specially designed to introduce them to the world of Jean Tinguely. Once the journey is complete, the students will come together to share their reflections, exchanging ideas and insights with one another through peer-to-peer discussions.
