Activities
During the exhibition visit, the arts tutors will help the children find out about the work of Yukinori Yanagi (b. 1959, Fukuoka, Japan; lives and works in Momoshima, Japan). Through his art, the Japanese artist explores the concept of travel as a continual search for his own identity. Particular focus will be given to works centred on the ideas of traces, movement, displacement, maps, and borders, and the diverse ways in which he brings these concepts to life: from walking through a monumental labyrinth of mirrors and containers, to observing an ant colony finding its way between 200 flags made with coloured sand, or marvelling at a whole series of optical illusions that recount the history of Japan.
In the workshop activities, the children will draw inspiration from Yanagi’s work in order to experiment with the many ways in which it is possible to move through space while being mindful and respectful of others. They will see how they can trace itineraries, paths, and boundaries and how these can shift and change over time.
