Breath Ghosts Blind
Thursday 2 December 2021, from 6 PM
Book signing with Maurizio Cattelan
In the presence of the public, Maurizio Cattelan signs copies of his latest INDEX (Milan: Pirelli HangarBicocca, and Venice: Marsilio Editori, 2021), a unique collection of all the conversations he had in the past twenty years with artists, intellectuals, creative figures and personalities from the entertainment world.
Rather elusive, rarely giving interviews, artist Maurizio Cattelan is perfectly suited instead to the role of the interviewer: since 2001, he has participated in innumerable conversations with other artists—at times directly, sometimes through an intermediary, occasionally in spirit alone—that have been brought together in a single publication, INDEX. As the second volume published on the occasion of the solo exhibition “Breath Ghosts Blind,” the anthology gathers over 130 texts that originally appeared in magazines and newspapers – including Flash Art, Purple Magazine, Vogue, and Il Manifesto – or in monographs and exhibition catalogues.
By presenting all the conversations as facsimile, thus maintaining the original texts and layout, INDEX becomes a kaleidoscope of voices and images, as well as a sui generis family album. Like the tiles of a mosaic, the interviews combine to create a unique and unprecedented portrait of the past few decades in visual culture and in Maurizio Cattelan’s practice, thus echoing the artist’s research on identity, the society we live in, and the power of images.
Rereading the texts and looking through the interviews, it is an astonishing chorus of people, ranging from young and emerging artists to established and historicized ones, and even artists who have passed away, including creative figures such as architects, designers, chefs, thinkers, writers, editors, make-up artists, Instagram celebrities, and people from the fashion and entertainment world.
