ART on Sundays – The 1980s: The Rediscovery of the Figure in Sculpture
21 June 2015 – 5.30pm
Free entrance at 5.30 pm
In his work, Juan Muñoz brought the human figure back into the centre of architectural space, after the long digression of the avant-gardes in the twentieth century, which had excluded any human representation from sculpture. In his works, the human figure is at the heart of an ambiguous relationship between the space and the viewer, helping create a sense of alienation of the individual when faced with the work. This is a journey that, partly through an analysis of the works of the German artist Thomas Schütte and of the American sculptor Robert Gober, retraces the role of figurative sculpture in the works of Juan Muñoz.
