Daniel Steegmann Mangrané’s first solo exhibition in Italy, presents over twenty works, produced from 1998 to today—including drawings, installations, films, videos, sculptures and virtual reality environments—placing the viewer in an intimate encounter with a depiction of nature and its ecosystems.

A longstanding fascination for the artist, biology is a central subject in his work, resulting in imagery that creates a strong visual framework through the inclusion of branches, leaves, and animals, as well as geometric and abstract motifs, which open a dialogue on the complex dynamics between the elements that surround us. His practice includes numerous references to the Brazilian rainforest, present in works such as Phasmides (2012) where through the observation of a phasmid, entomological name for the stick insect, the confinements between fiction and reality blend seamlessly. Whilst in the installation A Transparent Leaf Instead Of The Mouth (2016–17), conceived as a glass environment which evokes the atmosphere of the tropical rainforest, local trees and shrubs cohabit with different species of exotic stick and leaf insects.

The exhibition is characterized by a shift between material and immaterial experiences, expanded further through the site-specific intervention made of white transparent fabric partitions that redefine the industrial quality of Pirelli HangarBicocca, whilst both concealing and revealing the exhibited works. Like fluctuating membranes, these screens give shape to the different areas of the show while allowing, by means of their transparency, an immediate overview of the entire exhibition.
